What I Learned From My Talking Dog

What if you could hear your dog’s thoughts inside your head? What might you learn from them? Well, many years ago, I had a dream in which my Golden Retriever started talking to me. My little Golden girl is very wise and joyous; that’s why I named her Happy. In the dream and in real life, she has had a lot to teach me about love, play, forgiveness, and enjoying life. So after waking up from the dream, I wrote down our initial “conversation.” It went something like this:

Once Happy could see that I was now able to hear her thoughts inside my head, she gazed at me with a look of joy and delight. “There’s so much I want to talk to you about,” she began. “You’ve been chasing your tail for so long that it’s hard for me to watch you. I just want you to be happy, and play, and enjoy life as I do. It’s really not that hard.”

“It’s not that easy,” was my immediate defensive reply to her thoughts.

“Sure it is,” Happy quickly replied. “It’s the easiest thing in the world. Let me ask you a question. Can you throw a ball?”

Happy often seemed to be asking me this question with her eager and playful eyes. Yet, this time I heard her ask me in my head.

“Yes, of course,” I said. I wondered where she was going with this.

Happy’s dancing ears and eyes were in full bloom as she looked straight at me…
